What Does Criticism Do?
This is an important question, and one that I'm not going to give its due, but I feel like I need to touch on it. You can probably determine if a piece of art is good or bad by your own merit, so why do we have professionals (or even geeks with a Weebly account) to tell us what we can figure out for ourselves? There is more than one answer to this question, so list time!
1. It's funny. I know that M. Night Shyamalan's Avatar adaptation is a stupid, bad movie, but hearing Doug Walker complain about it and watching sketches making fun of it make something funny that I couldn't do on my own in my head with any tact. This is where people like Lindsay Ellis, Garret Snook, and Todd Nathanson come into play. What they make isn't necessarily enlightening, but it is funny, and that's why we keep coming back to it.
2. It's new! There's this great scene from Ratatouille that can explain this much more articulately than I can.

Before people go to see, read, eat, watch, or hear something new, they will probably want to ask someone who has already seen, read, eaten, watched, or heard it already to decide if it is something they would enjoy seeing, reading, eating, watching, or hearing themselves. This is where first-responders come in to analyze it and break it apart from different perspectives to award a proper recommendation. I wanna know things about the movie that I'm going into, and this is one of the ways I would find out.
3. You can learn from it. If you watch an analysis of something that isn't new, it was probably written because there is some merit to it that we can learn from. Negative criticism is so popular because a person can learn from it. You can better refine your own analytical mind, or you can learn something to look out for when you make something similar, or you learn more about a films subtext and better understand the world around you.
Since I like to be a teacher of sorts, I try to educate about narrative in my review. If you want to write a book, or a play, or anything similar, I hope that you can take something out of what I have to offer here to better your writing, and better yourself. Enjoy.
