Simple Joys
Just so that you know, I actually do look at the surveys that you send me on the Leave me Feedback page. I don't think many people know that, but I do, so if you want to recommend me something, that's how you do it. Just remember that not everybody shares your opinion, and I'm not inclined to analyze it if I don't want to. This song was recommended to me by a friend of mine (I think), and I would like to apologize to them for my opinion of this song.
From a technical standpoint, this isn't really anything special. It's written in 4/4 and most of the music at least sounds like it's synthesized. This has a strangely country vibe to it. It's probably because of the chords used, but it does sound like something.
It really isn't that loud of a song either. This is in the same boat as Video Killed the Radio Star because it let's you hear it instead of forcing you to hear it. I like it when a song does this, but this song doesn't have anything interesting to hear. Overall this song sounds like a self defeating argument. There isn't much interesting about the way it sounds except for one very specific pitch inflection during the chorus. It's just... well... bland.
After listening to the chorus of this song, I have found a new song to add to the apocalypse playlist. The other 3 are Awoken, Radioactive, and Boulevard of Broken Dreams. This is a very apocalypse-y song. It reminds me of the post-Judgement Day universe of the Terminator franchise. The lyrics are the thing to like about this song, and I really do.
But, yet again, there is a significant disconnect between the video and the song. In the video they are birds... OK... what does that have to do with finding refuge from some hellish experience? I like the look of this video. It has interesting lighting, and the idea behind it is OK, I just don't get why this is the video that goes along with this song.
The more prolific readers of my reviews probably think I'm a bit of a hypocrite because I don't have any problems with OK GO when they do this, and admittedly you're right. I actually really like the music video for Radioactive and I should have given it a much higher score. I think having a music video that has nothing to do with your song works well if you aren't trying to be taken seriously, and it is probably my favorite form of music video production. When this disconnect doesn't work, the song is trying to be taken seriously. This is a good example.
OK, maybe I'm reading it wrong, let's try and decipher the symbolism.
There's an owl, OK, maybe she's an owl, and owls are wise. The duran duran guy is taking her out of the cage, and they run around, have sex a bit, maybe, and by the end of the video, he's a wise owl in the cage as well.
Well, what the heck.
I'm completely baffled. I have absolutely no idea what to make of this. It's the strangest thing...
I just don't know!
