Big Time
Hi there!
This is the second video by Peter Gabriel that I'm reviewing. Honestly, I like Sledgehammer a little bit better, but this one is definitely noteworthy. Let's take a look at Peter Gabriel's Big Time.
This is the second video by Peter Gabriel that I'm reviewing. Honestly, I like Sledgehammer a little bit better, but this one is definitely noteworthy. Let's take a look at Peter Gabriel's Big Time.
The Song
This song is about consumerism. This is a look into the need for stuff. This was an especially prominent cultural thing in 1986, and this is a satire of that. Obviously, this song still has meaning and it's definitely something everybody should take a look at.
This song also has some theological commentary. It says that different religions seem comparatively better to different people, and some people like to exploit that fact. Hey, I poke fun at religion as much as the next guy, but overall, why should people give a fluff? The message of the song is people don't care if you have material wealth, so why should you?
The Video
Unlike Sledgehammer, the video of which I praise for its relation to the song, This video has only relation to the songs overall meaning.
The video is really freaking over the top. I think I saw every animation technique known to man in this video, not even mentioning the video editing and the green-screen effects. They definitely pulled all the stops out. This thing is more random than the Pee Wee's Playhouse opening, and I love it!
Although it doesn't always make sense with the song lyrics, the video itself is a reflection of the songs entirety. The video is really over the top and big, just as the song is about stuff getting bigger. The song and the video compliment each other very well. And like most other videos, this is one that needs to be remembered in these times.
